What is needle felting and what tools do I need to start?
Author: Elaine TroutWhat is Needle Felting? It's the process of using a special needle to attach un-spun wool (called roving) to a fabric or felt surface to form a design. It basically entails “mashing” one set of fibers into another. The tip of a felting needle has notches cut into it, which interlock the fibers. Once you learn some basic techniques, it is really a fun and simple craft to do! Needle felted designs can be used to decorate shoulder or tote bags, clothing, home décor items and more. Embroidery stitches and embellishments such as beads or sequins can be added to enhance your felted design. You can also needle felt on pre-made wool items such as balls or spirals to create your own jewelry or other accessories! Items you will need for needle felting include: A felting needle, a foam block to protect your work surface, roving, and a fabric or felt surface on which you will apply the roving. If the outlines of your design are already printed on the surface you can simply start filling the areas with roving. If the design is not printed, you can use dressmaker’s chalk to draw the design onto the surface. Check your local craft store for needle felting kits and felt fashion accessories.
