Dina Wakley shows you how to create a mini art journal with just one sheet of paper! You’ll add paints, inks and stamping to make a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
Instructions
STEP 1:
Start with a 9x12 inch sheet of heavy watercolor paper. Spread some light blue paint on the watercolor paper using an old gift card as the applicator. Don’t fill in the whole sheet, leave white spaces.
STEP 2:
Punch a line of 1 inch holes in the sheet of acetate using the 1 inch hole punch. You just created a custom stencil! Spray some yellow circles onto the watercolor paper using your circle stencil and yellow spray ink.
STEP 3:
Spray some alphabet letters onto the watercolor paper using the purple spray ink and alphabet stencil.
STEP 4:
Create some white circles on the watercolor paper by dipping a spray ink lid into gesso. Set the paper aside to dry completely.
STEP 5:
Fold the paper as shown: Fold the paper in half each direction. From the longest direction, fold each end into the middle fold, so the sheet is divided into 8 equal parts.
STEP 6:
Make a cut along the two middle sections of the center fold (along the dashed lines in the diagram).
STEP 7:
Fold the paper in half along the long fold. Pull the two center sections towards the outside. Fiddle with the pages to see how they lay best. Use the bone folder to crease the pages down into a booklet format.
STEP 8:
Stamp imagery onto the manila tag using black ink. Fold it in half. Stamp imagery onto the pages of your book also using black ink.
STEP 9:
Stamp some of the same images you used in your book on the dictionary paper. Cut out portions of the image and glue it onto the image in your book. Add journaling and text around your stamped images with a black pen.
STEP 10:
Add photographs and/or ephemera. Cut small strips of patterned paper with pinking shears, and place them around one edge of each photograph. The paper will help to draw attention to your photos against the busy background.
STEP 11:
Punch a tag from the patterned paper using the Tag Punch. Ink the edges of the tag. Layer foam sticker letters onto the tag for a title.
STEP 12:
Add color to your manila tag using spray ink and a paintbrush. Simply open the spray ink bottle and dip the wet paintbrush right in.
STEP 13:
Tint your ribbon with spray ink. When the ribbon is dry, glue it to the inside of the manila tag.
STEP 14:
Open your book to the middle and punch two 1/8” holes in the fold (one from the top and one from the bottom). Punch corresponding holes in the fold of the manila tag. Tie the tag into your book with the waxed linen thread.
