A Spotted Canary Project by Renaissance crafter

7 July 2009

Diorama cards add depth and make things look real – they can open up a window on the world! If you are mailing your diorama, it is important that it flattens. Make sure each side is flat as you secure the double-stick tape. This diorama design can be made to the size that fits your images. You could also incorporate punch art, photographs, etc., into making your dioramas.

Instructions

STEP 1:

This diorama has three layers, so cut three strips of paper the same height and length (4.5 x 8 inches – to be safe, you can add length and cut it off when you assemble the card). Finished size of this card when standing is 4.5 by 7 inches, but it flattens longer, so the envelope will need to be longer than that. We will begin at the back layer. Stamp your message and images. Use embossing powder and the heat tool to emboss if you desire. The back layer will not be cut with the oval cutter. The next two will be cut with the oval cutter, in graduated sizes. Stamp your second layer, having your image over to the side. Use the oval cutter to cut an oval in the second layer, but don’t cut into your image. Use the scissors to cut around the image. Next, stamp your front layer. Use the oval cutter to cut an even bigger oval, again cutting around your image with scissors.

STEP 2:

Lay the layers on top of each other, lining up the ovals so the bigger oval is evenly over the smaller oval. Score three different layers on each side, making the card the length needed for your images (example is seven inches wide). The front and back layers will have one inch “wings” at each end and the center layer (second one) will have half inch wings that will fold towards the back. The wings on the front layer will fold back and the wings on the back layer will fold forwards.

STEP 3:

Color your images.

STEP 4:

Apply the double-stick tape on the wings to the areas where they touch the other wings. Do one side at a time and flatten the diorama when you press the tape down, so that you are sure that if folds up fairly flat. Once one side is secured, do the other side.

STEP 5:

To provide a finished look, you can cut a piece of paper to apply to the back and coming around the wings if you desire. Attach with the double-stick tape.

STEP 6:

Embellish with ribbon or other embellishments.
