A Spotted Canary Project by brushnbecky

1 February 2012

Being 40 Sucks a bit less when you celebrate with this sweet birthday centerpiece.  Make this cute little “sucker” centerpiece to send to the birthday girl…or use it to decorate the table at a surprise party!  By simply stamping and then punching out a few colorful designs you can change ordinary suckers into whimsical flowers!  Create your centerpiece to be bright and colorful with a cute little sign on top or be a little ornery and say that “40 sucks”!

Instructions

STEP 1:

Trace around large and small Styrofoam circles with pencil on yellow-green cardstock. Cut out circles and glue to top of Styrofoam. For the smaller circles, stack three of the discs on top of each other and adhere with hot glue.

STEP 2:

Cover outside edges of each disc and also container (top of centerpiece) with yellow-green cardstock. Trace around container and cut a slightly smaller circle to fit inside top after filling with scraps of Styrofoam.

STEP 3:

Adhere covered disc shapes together to form base of centerpiece.

STEP 4:

Stamp circle design from Patterned Circles stamp set on cardstock colors (red ink on pink cardstock, lavender ink on purple cardstock, blue ink on light blue cardstock, orange ink on yellow cardstock).

STEP 5:

Punch out each stamped circle with 1-3/4 inch circle punch. Hot glue printed side of sucker wrapper to stamped circle.

STEP 6:

Stamp smaller Mod Flowers image on same cardstock colors as above. Punch out each flower using 7/8 inch circle punch. Glue on top of each sucker.

STEP 7:

Cut several 1/2 inch wide strips of yellow-green cardstock. Using green ink, stamp polka dot border on strips. Cut strips apart to 1-1/2 inch lengths. Curl lengthwise around pencil. Add hot glue to back of each curled strip and glue to sucker sticks.

STEP 8:

Cut 40 small pieces of yellow-green ribbon and tie to top of each sucker stick.

STEP 9:

Adhere suckers to edge of base on centerpiece as shown. Insert remaining three suckers into container at top.

STEP 10:

Stamp leaves with Kelly green ink on yellow-green cardstock. Cut out each leaf shape. Use ink pad directly on paper to edge around each leaf shape. Crinkle leaves a bit in your hand and then hot glue leaves to each side of sucker stems.

STEP 11:

Use black ink to stamp “40” on yellow-green cardstock. You’ll need 8 in all. Punch out 8 scalloped circles from black cardstock.

STEP 12:

Adhere yellow-green “40” circles to black scalloped cardstock circles. Sandwich wooden skewer between two circles. Snip skewers to desired height and insert in Styrofoam base as shown. Add ribbon bow to each side of pick.

STEP 13:

Use black ink to stamp birthday greeting on yellow-green cardstock two times. Cut out both squares. Ink around outside edges with green ink.

STEP 14:

Mat squares on black cardstock and sandwich wooden skewer between the two squares. Add ribbon to bottom on both sides and insert into top of centerpiece.
