Vacations always yield tons of photos, and what better way to show them off than with some gorgeous scrapbook pages? Whether you are vacationing in the mountains or at the beach you can recreate the mood and fun times with these scrapbooking travel tips and tricks.
Make a Splash!
Gorgeous beaches and fun-filled cruises are popular vacation destinations. Try these ideas to bring that "fun in the sun" feeling to your layouts:
- Think about your color palette. For water photos, choose cool shades of blue to create that feel of the ocean. Choose warm yellows and oranges to convey the feeling of heat. This is a perfect way to capture the feeling of the beach. By mixing and matching shades you can add contrast and interest to your layout.
- Save items from your vacation to be used for page elements later. Shells or sand can be used in a shaker box and can be incorporated right on your pages.
- Use items that represent part of your vacation destination. For example, adding rope to this layout really gives the feeling of being on a cruise ship.

- Look for stickers that present the feeling of beaches, cruises and pool trips, such as those by Jolee’s Boutique.
- To create the effect of water or sand, try tearing strips of paper and layering them on top of one another.
The Great Outdoors:
Spending time in nature, whether it is camping, hiking or mountain biking, always makes for some beautiful photos. Show them off on pages as natural looking as the photos themselves by trying one of these ideas:
- Mimic the color palettes inspired by your mountain scenery, such as shades of green, tans and other neutrals.
- Pick up small elements on your trip, like twigs, small stones and leaves, and display them in your projects. You can use them as accents or do paper rubbings of elements to use on your page.
- Or if you don’t have access to these natural elements, look for synthetic versions in your stores (the floral department is a great source). For example: the wooden pieces used in the title of this layout mimic the wooden feeling of nature, but they were purchased in a craft store!

- Run to your stamp drawer and use stamps of natural elements, like branches, rocks or woodland animals, to add a natural look to your pages.
- Create some distressing looks with ink, sanding and paper tearing to give a natural aged look to page elements, like the rock wall in Holly’s camping layout above.
Snow Fun!
Winter vacations to snowy destinations can be so much fun! Check out these ideas to enhance your pages of snow skiing, sledding and other winter fun activities:
- Try working with a neutral palette (white, black and shades of grey) on your winter pages. A lack of color can help the subjects in your photos stand out. If you want to add a little bit of color to pages try pale blues or purples to add cool colors without overwhelming the neutral look.
- Add some silver accents to your winter vacation pages. Silver glitter, brads or even stamped images of snowflakes or silver trees can add just the right amount of shimmer to your layout.
- Try adding shiny beads, crystal brads or glittered elements in white to give your winter vacation layouts some snowy sparkle without having to add any color.

Whether you vacation at the beach or the mountains, on a cruise ship or at a snow covered chalet, picking the right products and using the right techniques will help to make your vacation layouts shine! Use the color palettes or experiment with natural elements seen on your excursions with your next batch of vacation photos, and you'll be scrapbooking travel memories like a pro in no time!
