A Spotted Canary Project by InkaCatherine

6 January 2010

Challenge yourself  to explore and complete a  journal about an ancestor you may never have  had an opportunity to meet. Even if there are skeletons in your ancestral closet, you can still create a memorable journal and scrapbook page for Family History Month (which is October!). Slide the portion of the journal you prefer to keep private, into a pocket - you create - by sewing on your Family History Layout.

Instructions

STEP 1:

Create a frame for the photo - stamp a gray-blue cardstock panel with copper ink-use stamps to match the mood of the layout. Adhere the photo. Scrape along the frame edge with the copper ink.

STEP 2:

Apply die cut butterfly to the top right of the frame panel.

STEP 3:

Stamp 'I Was Here' with blue ink on white cardstock, trim close, adhere to a created arrow shape; then to the top of the frame, pointing the arrow to the left.

STEP 4:

Using the alphabet stamps and blue metallic ink, stamp' My Grandfather' on a white cardstock panel.

STEP 5:

Punch the top side only with the binder edger and scrape with copper ink along the other three edges.

STEP 6:

Stamp the remaining small panels : 2 small punched squares, Postage Date Cancellation and Live Your Own Life. Set aside for later use. Using the alphabet stamps and blue metallic ink, stamp' My Grandfather' on a white cardstock panel.

STEP 7:

Generate journal block on the computer, including the 'private information' at the bottom -print on white cardstock. Scrape along the edges of the journal panel with copper ink.

STEP 8:

Adhere - the die cuts - butterfly, 2 stamped squares and date cancellation to the journal block. **Hint: Remember to attach only the portion touching the journal block, this will allow the journal block to slide in the pocket.

STEP 9:

Using gray-blue thread and a sewing machine attach the bottom pattern paper panel to the page - creating a pocket for your journal block. This panel should be long enough to cover the portion of the journal you want to hide.

STEP 10:

Assemble the rest of the page adhere the photo frame, the arrow should be pointing towards the journal. This arrow will help accentuate the journal.

STEP 11:

Embellish the bottom panel with the title, adhesive border and die cuts.

STEP 12:

Slide the journal block into the pocket.

STEP 13:

NOTE: Use rubber stamps, softer inks and die cuts to help achieve the desired emotion and time period of your ancestor. This will add emphasis to your journal and your Family History Layout.
