Getting started with a new craft can be a little overwhelming at times, especially if you aren’t happy with the results as you work. Use these needlepoint tips and tricks to keep your hobby stress free.
Preventing your canvas edges from unraveling:
Before you start stitching on your canvas be sure to do something to the edges to prevent them from unraveling as you work.
There are a couple of options to do this:
- Fold the edges of the canvas in 1/4 to 1/2 inch all around and stitch with a zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine. If you choose this option make sure you have plenty of canvas to complete your pattern.
- You can use a small bead of white craft glue around the edges or tape the edge with a 1 inch wide masking tape. Lay the edge of the canvas in the center of the tape and fold the excess tape down to the other side of the canvas. If you opt for the white glue method, be sure it’s completely dry before you do any stitching.
Smoother Stitching:
To keep your stitches looking perfect, poke your needle in a new fabric softener sheet and pull the yarn through; this will keep your yarn looking smooth and new. It can also help to prevent knots.
Watch Your Tension:
As you stitch, pay close attention to how tight you pull your yarn, keeping a consistent tension as you make each stitch. This will keep all your stitches neat, uniform and even, and your completed project should not have any buckles.
Ending Thread:
When you are ready to change thread, never end your dark thread under a light thread; this will cause you to have dark shadows that can be seen through the top of the canvas.
Reducing Knots in Thread:
- Let the Needle Dangle: the first way to reduce knots is to let the needle dangle from the back of the work.
- Moistening the thread really works wonders for eliminating knots and tangles but be sure to let the yarn dry completely before stitching with it.
- If you use shorter lengths of thread you will have to replace your thread more often which means you have to get another piece of yarn before it gets tangled.
Frame:
Mount your canvas in a scroll-frame or stretcher bars. Hoops are not recommended because they pull and distort the canvas.
Finishing:
Remember to block your piece when you are finished so that it’s in square before you make it into a pillow. Using a canvas or scroll frame will help keep your piece from distorting.
