I have three small children, and the best tip I have learned in teaching them how to write is from one of our preschool teachers. One of them suggested a set of laminated cards that they could trace words or letters on. They suggested making one with their name, and some with animals and letters or words. By associating a word with the letter when they write it will help them in the years to come when they begin to read too. These cards were simple and fun to make—and they are so cute! Because they are laminated I can use them for each of my children too, and that is a good thing!
Instructions
STEP 1:
Adult: Type text and print in grey onto white cardstock. Cut to fit below the animal cards. Round the bottom corners and adhere to animal card.
STEP 2:
Allow children to select and help place decorative border and other desired embellishments.
STEP 3:
Adult: Laminate. Punch hole and add eyelet. Add cards to an office ring.
STEP 4:
Tip for Success: When you are teaching a preschooler to write, much of their writing is not legible - but they are able to learn to by tracing images. Because of this, try using laminated cards for them to write on. This way you can write, erase, and use them again and again. Vis-à-vis dry erase pens tend to work well on laminated images.
STEP 5:
Techniques: Laminating you can do at home or at an office supply store. It is very inexpensive and can make many things you do last longer—from teaching your kids to write to bag tags to home organization—creating and laminating your creations is a good thing.
