This adorable scarf will make a great Valentine’s Day or an everyday handcrafted gift. Easy to create, our scrappy love scarf is a great way to use up those random scraps of fabric lying around your craft studio. What a stylish way to put your own spin on a plain red scarf for this season!
Instructions
STEP 1:
Follow the kit instructions and stich the "Much Love” felt and fabric applique piece.
STEP 2:
Trim excess material from applique piece leaving about 1/4” to turn under (if needed iron) and stitch to avoid fraying. Stitch the “Much Love” piece on the scarf with a straight stitch using green embroidery floss and needle.
STEP 3:
Stitch petal flower and felt balls to upper left corner in a decorative cluster (try to use a thread piece long enough to stitch all 4 pieces on so there will only be the one knot in the back. This will make it look neater).
STEP 4:
Cut hearts in 3 different sizes out of colored felt. To make heart cut outs, first cut out a heart, then cut another heart from the inside of that heart. This will give the heart outline you will use.
STEP 5:
Once cut out, use felting needle and foam board to needle felt hearts to scarf. Simply place scarf over foam block in area to be worked. Place hearts on scarf one by one and begin to needle felt by poking the entire heart shape. This may take a bit of time as the complete heart shape should be needled felted.
STEP 6:
Stitch the 3 hearts using buttonhole stitch and straight stitch to bottom right corner of opposite end of scarf than the “Much Love” artwork. Two felt hearts have a straight stitch; the other has a buttonhole stitch.
STEP 7:
Cut out, iron, and arrange your scraps on each of the red felt strips. At this stage, make sure there is a front and back for your strips, that way you won’t see the back of the fabrics you use; only the front no matter how you wear the scarf. When arranging, you will have 2 layers of strips with wrong sides together, then pin in place to red felt strip. (The felt strip hides the raw edges and gives you something to attach scraps to scarf easier.)
STEP 8:
Stitch scraps to felt pieces on 5/8” on sewing machine or smaller.
STEP 9:
Take finished scrap piece and place on scarf with seam just above the bottom of scarf. (Stitch piece on 1/4” from edge. Use felting tool and foam board to attach the rim of red felt to scarf.
STEP 10:
Stitch scraps to scarf along original stitch line (where you first attached scraps to felt strip).
STEP 11:
Cut any loose threads. Scraps can be trimmed and cleaned up at this stage, or left frayed, depending on personal preference.
