Learn the creative quilt techniques of Anna Faustino by making a quilt “sandwich” and using a rotary cutter to craft an amazingly colorful and unique quilt embellished with hot flat back crystals.
Instructions
STEP 1:
Make a quilt “sandwich”, using the background fabric fused to the batting technique.
STEP 2:
Fuse the backing fabric to the batting using the HeatnBond instructions.
STEP 3:
Fuse Wonder Under or Soft Fuse to the right side of the background fabric. Remove the paper and save it.
STEP 4:
Fold the black knit fabric in half -- 19 x 19 inches. Stretch and stitch 2 sides like a pillowcase.
STEP 5:
Pull the knit “pillow case” over the Masonite board by stretching it.
STEP 6:
Stretch and pin the opened sides together.
STEP 7:
Make numerous cuts with the rotary blade spontaneously and evenly to distress the stretched knit fabric. You can make the cuts into a floral design. Thin strips should be no smaller than 1/4 inch wide.
STEP 8:
Unpin the pinned side and slide the quilt sandwich with the multi-colored Wonder Under fused side UP under cut knit fabric and pin opened side.
STEP 9:
Cover the quilt top with the release paper from Wonder Under fusible web. Set the iron on cotton setting. Iron through the paper 3-4 minutes. Remove the paper.
STEP 10:
Square the quilt top to 21 x 21 inches trimming off excess.
STEP 11:
Fuse the appliqué. Couch on the edge with gold yarn or embroidery floss. Quilt by stippling with clear thread as you wish.
STEP 12:
Prepare the binding. Sew it to the quilt front and hand-sew binding on the back of the quilt.
STEP 13:
Use the Hot Fix tool and a variety of sizes of Swarovski Hot Fix Crystals to embellish your quilt.
