A Spotted Canary Project by D.Jorge

17 January 2012

Delightful as it is durable, you’ll love wearing this spring inspired choker year-round. This choker is simply made by wrapping wire and beads around a memory wire base. The finished length of the piece is 11 1/4 inches. It’s a good idea to measure the circumference of your neck before you begin to adjust the design if needed.

Instructions

STEP 1:

Using memory wire cutters, cut a length of memory wire with a 1 1/2 inch overlap. Make a loop at one end with round nose pliers. If you don’t have memory wire cutters, bend the memory wire back and forth until it breaks off.

STEP 2:

String two bicones of each color in the following order: violet, vintage rose and light grey opal. Continue the pattern until it repeats itself a total of 12 times. If you want a longer choker, add more beads to elongate the piece. Fold a piece of tape over the unfinished end of the memory wire next to the last bead added to prevent the beads from sliding off.

STEP 3:

Cut a 45 inch piece of 24 gauge wire. Leaving a 1 inch tail, wrap the wire around the memory wire base next to the loop 3 times. Trim off any excess with wire cutters and tuck in protruding ends with bent nose pliers.

STEP 4:

String 5 violet bicones and wrap the wire once around the memory wire between the second violet bead and the first vintage rose bicone. Always wrap from the back of the piece to the front. String on 5 vintage rose bicones and wrap the wire around the memory wire base between the second vintage rose bicone and the first light grey opal bead. Continue the pattern until you reach the end.

STEP 5:

When you reach the end, carefully remove the tape and wrap the 24 gauge wire 3 times around the memory wire. Trim off any excess memory wire and make a plain loop.

STEP 6:

Cut a 45 inch piece of 26 gauge wire and leaving a 1 inch tail wrap it around the memory wire next to the loop. You may have to wrap it over the previous wire. Trim off any excess from the tail and tuck in loose ends with bent nose pliers.

STEP 7:

Pass the wire through the open center of the first flower from the back to the front, being careful not to kink the wire. String any 6 mm bead and take the wire back through the center of the flower. The 6 mm bead should lie snugly on top of the bicone loops. If necessary, give the wire a slight tug to make sure that the 6 mm bead is snug against the bicones. Bring the wire up through the center of the adjacent flower and continue adding 6 mm beads randomly until you reach the last flower.

STEP 8:

When you reach the end, wrap the wire 3 times next to the memory wire loop. Trim any excess wire and tuck in any loose ends.
