Repurpose unwanted t-shirts into a fabulous necklace.
Instructions
STEP 1:
Begin by selecting a favorite old t-shirt that you are ready to part with. Or head to a thrift store and peruse through the t-shirt aisles until you come across the perfect-shirt for your necklace.
STEP 2:
Cut the hem off of the t-shirt.
STEP 3:
Next cut nine 2 inch sections from the t-shirt cutting horizontally from one closed side to the other.
STEP 4:
Once those sections are cut you will have nine loops. Cut those loops open from a seam.
STEP 5:
Stretch each strip to get it to lengthen and roll up on itself.
STEP 6:
Tack stitch three of the strips together at one end.
STEP 7:
To braid you will need to be able to pull against the strips to create tension. To do this, clip the stitched end in a binder clip or pin it with a safety pin. Using the safety pin or binder clip, secure the strips to a piece of furniture, your tennis shoe laces, or something that will allow you to create tension as you braid the strips.
STEP 8:
Once braided, tack stitch through the end to hold the braid together. Sew the ends together to create a loop.
STEP 9:
Repeat two more times to create 3 braided loops.
STEP 10:
Cut a section from the shirt about 3x4 inches. Wrap this section around the hem ends; doing this will hold the coils together and hide the hem. Sew it as tight against the necklace as possible without sewing the necklace.
STEP 11:
Once it is sewn you will turn over the wrapped section to hide the seam.
STEP 12:
Using your needle and thread, sew the Bitz of Glitz around the necklace in a random order for embellishment.
STEP 13:
Attach the ready-to-wear flower embellishment to the necklace.
STEP 14:
To wear, twist and wrap the loop around once to create a short necklace, or leave it long.
