Author: Holly Craft

We all love to receive gifts, especially handcrafted gifts. Part of the fun is the unwrapping of the gift. Often the gift wrapping becomes a gift itself. Today’s paper crafters have a plethora of choices of patterns, boxes and materials to work with for creating impressive gift wrapping. Containers for nominal objects such as wrapped candies get a lot of attention. Think how much further you could ratchet up the gift wrapping for something as nice as hand crafted jewelry gifts. Let’s look at some options.

With the search engines available on the internet and all the various crafting internet groups, you can find countless numbers of patterns for boxes, bags and containers you can hand craft to use for gifts.

Stores from large discount chains, craft stores and even dollar stores house a wealth of possibilities. If you are up for an adventure, take a trip to the local thrift or consignment store and discover what treasures are waiting to be transformed into the perfect container for your hand crafted jewelry gifts. Sometimes the gift wrapping can be more fun to make than the actual gift!

There are beautiful decorative papers you can use to make containers; chipboard and paper Mache containers to decoupage or paint and stamp. Wooden chests or even frames can be the showcase for your gift. Use beautiful embellishments to add the finishing touches. Favor boxes of all types, shapes and sizes are available that don’t have to be used just for weddings or parties. Simple bags can be embellished and used to wrap your gift.

Jewel it Up:
Let’s consider, however, that if you are giving a piece of handcrafted jewelry, you might want to carry that theme over to the gift wrapping. Take the gift wrapping up a notch higher. Think of all the charms and crystals that could be added to make the gift wrap even more special. The ordinary cloth bag becomes extraordinary when you add charms to the drawstrings. The piece of ribbon used in the gift wrapping will sparkle with the addition of some Hotfix crystals. Perhaps you want the gift wrap to be something that can have it’s own purpose and be used beyond being the gift wrap.

Here is an example of gift wrap that is a gift itself.

A simple corked bottle from a thrift store has become a charming vessel to hold the hand crafted necklace that is the gift. Afterwards, the bottle can reflect light as it sits in a window holding colored water. It can sit on a kitchen table with flowers in it. Perhaps it will be home for bath salts and be displayed on a shelf. The bottle charm is simple but elegant with the beautiful crystals entwined in the wire. A simple cork becomes a jeweled crown with the addition of Hotfix crystals. To hide the necklace that is contained in the bottle, a piece of decorative paper is rolled up and placed in the bottle. All of these slip into a sheer bag from the dollar store that has been dressed up with charms that were added to the drawstrings. The recipient might be so enthralled with the bottle itself that they will think it is the gift. Think of the surprise when they open the cork to find the necklace suspended inside.

As you can see, it doesn’t take a lot of time, expense or effort to create wonderful gift wrap for your handcrafted jewelry gifts. It takes thought and a keen eye open to possibilities. It is worth it when you see the sparkle in the recipient’s face when they see the gift and begin the unwrapping. They will consider you a jewel of a friend!
