Most teens carry their entire life in a handbag. Tween purses may hold their books, cell phone, allowance, lip gloss or even a stylish pair of sunglasses. It is not only an accessory to brighten up their wardrobes but a way of expressing who they are by showcasing their individual style. It is a blank canvas for painting their personality, hobbies, and individual styles. With a few tips and pointers, take a plain handbag and turn it into a stylish designer bag that all your friends will want!
First, choose a base for your tween purses.
- Start with a hand-me-down purse from a mom, sister or aunt. It is the perfect base for embellishing.
- Check the dollar section at discount stores for bags and purses.
- Find a lightly used handbag at thrift stores or at garage sales.
- Create your own with a few stitches and materials you may have at home.
- Purchase a kit for a fabric-based purse for embellishing.
- Use a cosmetic bag that stores make-up.
- Old clothing such as jeans, bandanas, sweaters and beach towels make great handbags.
Once you have the supplies you need, let the embellishing F-U-N begin.Cosmetic Bag Purse:
Use a makeup bag to hold your essentials. Add a handle or strap using ribbon, cording, shoelaces, chain or wire with beads. Embellish the bag with floral fabric pieces to create an eye-catching accent. A cosmetic bag is the perfect size for a night out with friends. Silk flowers are bright and cheery. Find premade flowers in the
scrapbook or jewelry section at the craft store - they add a perfect
sophisticated edge to your design.
Owl Kit Purse:
It is as easy as 1-2-3 to create this darling owl cell phone holder purse. Follow the simple directions to sew your own bag. Add gems, buttons or ribbon to make your owl as unique as you are. Dress it up in style.
Make your purse shine by attaching sparkly gems. Add them to the pocket of the bag, create a design or add polka dots of glitz by sewing crystals everywhere! Be sure to use a jewelry adhesive that's made for your fabric type if you're not stitching your gems in place.
Fancy Zipper-Pull Purse:
Zip up your bag with razzle dazzle charm. Add beads, charms or pendants to the zipper - not only to create ease in opening and closing your hand bag but as a beautiful decoration. Add ribbons, yarn or whatever matches your personality!
Canvas Bag with Iron-ons:
Add iron-ons to personalize fabric totes. With help, iron on a sparkly flower and embellish it with a button center. You can even create personal iron-ons with a computer and printer. Use special iron-on transfer paper to put your BFF’s photo or a favorite pet’s photo on your bag.
Felt Pins Purse:
Use a felt mini purse, eyeglass case, or tote to embellish with premade felt daisies or bright felted balls. Create felted flower pins using a kit. Pin or stitch a few flowers onto your mini purse.
A few simple stitches can turn a plain purse into an extraordinary fashion statement. Using a template or your own sketch, draw your designs and then stitch away. Create a simple stitched outline on your handbag, a sewn trendy bird icon or a fun stitched word such as “Bliss”.
Use felt to cut out the initials in your name and glue or stitch to your handbag. Or arrange rhinestones to create your monogram.
Buttons and Ribbons:
Using leftover sewing and craft supplies for your designer handbag helps you save your allowance but also allows you to put a creative spin on your bag. Use ribbon as a zipper pull or as a girly twist by tying several bows and securing them to your bag. Create a heart or star shape entirely out of buttons to embellish a purse.
Doodling never looked so clever. Individualize your bag with your friends’ names, things you like to say or doodle designs like smiley faces. Use fabric markers or even rubber stamps with solvent ink. This might make a festive sleep-over bag or a unique lunch sack.
There are no limits when you're creating teen and tween purses. Stretch your creative muscles and craft a one-of-a-kind bag that's totally you!
