A Spotted Canary Project by Renaissance crafter

17 September 2009

Recycle and keep Green by transforming that discarded denim skirt or pair of jeans into a cute apron you can use in the kitchen or in your craft room. This project combines needle felting and embroidery. What a fun gift to make for Mom or that special cook!

Instructions

STEP 1:

Cut around the side seams and across the lower portion of the front waistband of the skirt, leaving the seams in tact. If using jeans rather than a skirt, you need to make adjustments for the curvature of the crotch and hem the unfinished edges at the bottom of the skirt.

STEP 2:

Complete the embroidery from your Crewel Embroidery Kit and press under the edges, so you have clean finished edges to stitch to the apron. Depending on the fabric used, an additional piece of fabric can be used behind the embroidery to make it more opaque. Stitch the embroidery piece in place and embellish the corners with buttons.

STEP 3:

Using wool roving, needle and foam block, create an image that goes with your embroidery piece. Simply place the foam block on the reverse side of the fabric, place a small amount of wool roving in the selected spot, and using the needle, jab the wool roving into the fabric. The texture of the wool will fuse with the fabric. The example uses ice cream as a subject, so the ice cream on the top of a cone was felted. Embellish with additional embroidery and buttons as desired.

STEP 4:

If the skirt or jeans waistband is the correct size, the actual waistband can be used as the closure for the apron. A scarf can be used through the belt loops for added color. If the waistband does not fit, “tails” can be added to the apron, using part of the left over denim, different cloth or a long scarf can be used.

STEP 5:

ADDITIONAL NOTES: The denim skirt is much easier to use than a pair of jeans, but jeans will work. Experiment also with using the leg of the jeans or the front of the jeans for your apron, depending on how much sewing you desire to do and the type of apron you are making. Use care in laundering your apron, due to the embroidery and wool felting. You might want to prewash the embroidery before applying it to the apron. It is assumed that you are using denim that has been washed many times, but if you are using new denim fabric, it would also need to be pre washed.
