A Spotted Canary Project by CMScanlon

21 April 2009

Measure twice, cut once for this cosmetic bag project! To make sure you have the correct size bag, double check your measurements before you make any cuts

Instructions

STEP 1:

Paint canvas with a heavy coat of turquoise paint and let dry completely. Be sure to cover all areas of the canvas completely.

STEP 2:

When paint is dry, put a large puddle of the light green paint on a paper plate or scrap paper and dip the round cap in it, then stamp a random pattern on the canvas. Do this until you are happy with the final pattern and let dry completely.

STEP 3:

Cut two panels from the canvas, approximately 8 ½" x 11".

STEP 4:

Attach zipper according to the instructions included in the package.

STEP 5:

To attach the needlepoint, trim the canvas to approximately ½" inch from the edge. Turn the excess unstitched canvas to the backside and adhere with double stick tape. Do this on all 4 sides. Center the canvas on the bag and pin in place. Stitch to the bag as close to the edge as possible.

STEP 6:

With right sides together, sew the left and right sides of the bag together. Be careful when stitching at the top near the zipper - stitch over it several times but make sure that your needle doesn't get hung up on the teeth.

STEP 7:

Stitch across the bottom of the bag and clip the threads. To make a square bottom on your cosmetic bag put your hand inside the bag and flatten it in the opposite direction, basically you want to form a triangle with the corner of the bag by flattening it.

STEP 8:

Center your seam between the other 2 sides of the triangle and measure down from the point of the measurement of half the width you want the bottom to be when finished. To make a 2" side bottom you'll want to have 1" on each side of the seam.

STEP 9:

Using ruler to mark with pencil or chalk a vertical line across the corner triangle or just place a pin there. Stitch the vertical line, for a really strong bottom you can double stitch if you want to. Do the same thing for the other corner of the bag, snip the triangle off and turn the bag right side out and you're done.
