A Spotted Canary Project by Stephanie G.

11 January 2012

This simple needle felted blue heart necklace is just the right project for beginners.  Learn to make felt from roving and form it into a heart shape.  Swarovski crystals finish off your heart creation with a sparkling touch.

Instructions

STEP 1:

Make felt from the aqua and white roving. Open roving and unroll. Cut two pieces of aqua 3” long and two piece of white roving 2 1/2” long. Alternate felt on foam block. One 3” piece fiber running east to west, two 2 1/2” piece fibers running north to south, and the last 3” piece fibers running east to west. Fibers are crisscrossed to enable felt to be created. White roving will be sandwiched between the aqua roving. For thicker felt add additional layers.

STEP 2:

Place stacked roving on foam block. With felting needle, begin to poke the roving. Move needle around the roving to felt the complete surface. Flip over and repeat the needle felting process. The needle felting process may require turning over and felting (poking) of the roving multiple times to achieve the desired thickness.

STEP 3:

Repeat felting steps to create small white heart. Cut white roving into three 3” lengths and crisscross as instructed above. Place on foam block and needle felt to desired thickness.

STEP 4:

Cut hearts out of felt following the downloadable Felted Heart Template.

STEP 5:

Sew blue crystals (6) to top of small white heart. Stitch smaller white heart to larger blue heart using a blanket stitch.

STEP 6:

Thread jewelry line through the left side corner of heart aqua heart.

STEP 7:

String crystals in desired order onto each side of heart and tie the end of each strand to a silver jump ring.

STEP 8:

Thread ribbon necklace through the felted heart’s jump rings.
