A Spotted Canary Project by Spotted Canary

19 March 2009

Use embroidery transfers such as these paisley and floral motifs add a touch of elegance to almost anything using crewel embroidery. Combine the images in a way that suits you and stitch them in the colors you like. There are many products to choose from I found this savvy stitch kit.

Instructions

STEP 1:

Choose your garments carefully: the transfers print in black, so they will not show on very dark colors. Experiment with the stitches, play with the colors, and allow your creativity to soar!

STEP 2:

The transfers are printed with a special iron-on ink and can be used multiple times. The color may change after several uses, but it will still work. Set your iron to the wool/cotton setting and allow it to pre-heat. Do not use steam.

STEP 3:

Look over your designs. Choose one to use for practice and cut it out if necessary. Be sure to trim off any excess printing or dots. Place the design face down on the right side of the scrap fabric. To make sure that the paper doesn’t shift, use sewing thread to hand baste the paper to the fabric along one side. Don’t use pins because the heads keep the iron off the paper, and don’t use tape because the adhesive will mark the fabric.

STEP 4:

Moving your iron in a circular motion, press the paper for 5 seconds. Allow it to cool, and carefully lift the loose edge to see if the lines are dark enough. If they are, remove the basting and paper. Once transferred, the design is permanent; it cannot be washed out.
