By my husband’s definition, a centerpiece is the frou-frou stuff that fills the space in the middle of a table. But by my definition, it is the ornamentation that enhances and bejewels my table setting. A centerpiece can enrich any party by bringing energy, beauty, attention and even the spark of conversation. And because they play such an important role in the overall feel of an event, a hostess should give creating homemade centerpieces quite a bit of thought and care.
There are some basic things to consider when creating a centerpiece. First and foremost is scale. A centerpiece should neither be too big nor too small for the table. A small table set for two does not require a grand statement. But a banquet table that seats ten guests would need something large and full. Second, it should not hinder conversation by blocking eye contact between guests. Third, the type and shape of the centerpiece will depend on how it is viewed. If it is to be seen from 360 degrees, all sides will need to be attractive. But if it is for a buffet table sitting along a wall, the backside of the piece will not necessitate prettiness. Fourth, a centerpiece should convey the theme or colors of the event. This touch will add continuity and further the overall emotion of the party.
Here are some additional ideas for creating handmade centerpieces that are truly memorable:
- Think beyond flowers, both paper and real. Use your paper crafting supplies to make pinwheels or attach themed die cuts to skewers. These can be arranged like flowers, but will add an unexpected charm to the table.
- Think beyond vases. Try using tins, paint cans, or even boots! Any flat bottomed item can serve as a centerpiece vessel. Sand, beans and rice are all inexpensive and easy ways to anchor individual items in a container.
- Think double-duty. Use the party favors staged on cake stands or a specially designed gift bag as the table focal point. This plan will help keep party costs low.
- Think home décor. Design personalized décor items that can either be given to the party’s honoree or can later be used in your own home. Embellished letters and stacked boxes are two ideas. Topiaries made with paper strips are another quick and easy way to decorate. Even framed scrapbook pages grouped together can showcase the party’s theme or honoree.
- Think found items. A creative display of everyday objects that reinforce the theme or color scheme can also become a stunning centerpiece. Grouping toy trucks and setting them on various risers for height variance would make a perfect focal point at a little boy’s truck-themed birthday party. This method is another time and cash saver.
Think creatively and follow these simple guidelines to create amazing homemade centerpieces for your next celebration!
