Information and step-by-step diagrams on blending roving colors to create subtle or dramatic shading.

Author: Elaine Trout

Blending roving colors is a great way to create effective and dramatic shading on your needle felting designs. It’s very easy to mix roving fibers together to create a new shade. You can blend two colors or even try blending three colors.

To blend colors take a small, thin amount of each roving color and gently knead them together in your hands to intertwine the fibers. Needle felt the blended roving in place. You can adjust the look of the blend by adding or taking away a bit of one color. You want to achieve a soft, mottled look.

For a wispy, semi-transparent appearance, start with a very thin amount of one roving color and needle felt it in place. Add a very thin amount of a second color in and around the first color. Start subtly and build thin layers until you achieve the desired effect.

Have fun experimenting with these techniques. Blending roving colors will add much more visual interest to your needle felting projects.
