A Spotted Canary Project by Renaissance crafter

21 April 2009

Enhance your stamped images, create great backgrounds and make your own embellishments all with one simple tool…blending chalks!

Instructions

Blending Chalk Butterfly Card Step 1 Image

STEP 1:

Use Chalks to color the light areas of the photograph. Cut the photo with an oval cutter.

Blending Chalk Butterfly Card Step 2 Image

STEP 2:

To create the marbleized background, scrape 2-3 colors of chalk into a tray of water using a craft knife or other knife.

STEP 3:

Gently swirl the chalk around. Place a piece of cardstock that will fit into the tray on the surface of the water. Lift up and allow to dry. If the cardstock is warped when dry, iron the cardstock. Cut an oval larger than the photo to use as a mat. On another piece of white cardstock, randomly stamp butterflies using watermark ink. Next, apply chalk to the stamped images and the background. Use a paper towel or tissue to wipe off any excess chalk.

STEP 4:

Cut and fold the card base out of pink cardstock. Randomly stamp butterflies on the card and color with chalks as desired. Cut the watermarked piece of cardstock so it will fit on the card. Tear one edge so that the background on the card will show. Use double stick tape and adhesive foam circles to adhere the different layers to the card.

STEP 5:

For the embellishments, stamp a large butterfly on the rough side of clear or frosted shrink plastic. If the shrink plastic has not been sanded, use a sanding block to lightly sand one side so the chalks will stick.

STEP 6:

When the ink is dry, color the sanded side of the butterfly and cut out the image with sharp scissors. Use a heat gun (or place in a toaster oven used only for crafting) to shrink the plastic. When choosing the image for shrink plastic, be sure to choose one that is larger in size than what you want the finished piece to be as shrink plastic will shrink considerably. When working with shrink plastic and other materials, make extras as you are doing them. If the first one you try does not come out to your liking, you will have more from which to choose. Save the extras to use on a quick card.

STEP 7:

Stamp a smaller butterfly with permanent ink on clear acetate or transparency that has had adhesive added. Once the ink is dry, cut the image out with scissors.

Blending Chalk Butterfly Card Step 8 Image

STEP 8:

Apply chalks to the sticky side of the butterfly. Use adhesive foam circles to adhere the butterfly embellishments to the card, adding antennae made from thread if desired. The antennae on butterflies can be tricky to cut out, so just cut off the stamped antennae and add dark thread. It will give dimension and look more realistic.

STEP 9:

Choose buttons that coordinate with the colors of your card and thread thin white yarn through the button holes. Use adhesive foam circles to adhere the buttons to the card and then use chalks to color the yarn to match the button.
